Freaky Green Eyes

by Joyce Carol Oates

Harper Collins, 2004, 223 pages, ISBN 0007183143

How easy was it to get stuck into this book?
This book follows Francesca Pierson, or Franky as she likes to be known, who is one of three children whose father is the famous news presenter Reid Pierson. As the story progresses a serious rift emerges in the Pierson family, and Francesca seems to be the only person who can control it.

Who are the main characters?
The main characters are the different members of the Pierson family, who are Francesca, or Franky, the oldest daughter, her younger sister Samantha, their step-brother Todd, their mum Krista and their dad, Reid, who is a famous newspresenter. Throughout the book Franky also communicates with a sort of dual self, who she calls Freaky Green Eyes.

What's the storyline?
The book follows the domestic feuds in the Pierson family, mainly caused by the vain and slightly twisted father, who although a model of perfection on television is a is a very different father. Eventually things reach an ultimatum, and something terrible happens, but can Franky condemn some of her closest family forever?

How's it written?
The book is probably best suited for middling to older readers.

Other books by the same author that Tim knows about?
Big Mouth, Ugly Girl

The overall verdict is
Really good stuff

Quick Pick
- 08 September 2010 -

The Last of the Sky Pirates is the fifth in the Edge Chronicles series by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell (illustrator). Like the other books it is very inventive and is a great read for almost anyone in our age-range.
