Malka is a seven year old Polish Jew in WW2. Along with her mother and sister she has to escape Poland very quickly when a German 'operation' is mounted. Soon Malka becomes ill and Hannah decides to leave her until she is well again. But the family Malka is staying with turn her out and she is all on her own - freezing and starving - while her mother is searching for her. This book was easy to get into, and the whole way through I couldn't stop reading it, writes Elizabeth (14).
